Firearm Safety & CWP Certification Classes

You can choose pistol, rifle or shotgun training class that can be completed in one day. If you choose more than one type of firearm, it will take longer. You will learn the fundamentals of firearm safety and how to safely handle firearms. Your class includes your own book on firearms safety from the National Rifle Association, the world’s leader in firearm safety training. You will get hands-on training with a variety of school guns and be able to shoot different guns so you can see and feel for yourself how a gun fits your hand. You will learn how to load, unload and safely shoot firearms. We will go to a shooting range and fire live ammunition. You will learn how to safely store firearms and how to clean and care for firearms. You will learn about firearm ammunition, how it works, different types, and how to safely store ammunition. You will learn about your own firearm if you are not familiar with it.

If you want instruction for your Concealed Weapon Permit application, you will learn about your rights and responsibilities if you choose to carry a concealed firearm. You will learn about what firearms are suitable for concealed carry and how to safely carry a concealed firearm.

If you own a firearm, I encourage you to bring it to class. Make sure your firearm is unloaded! Bring at least 50 rounds or more of target ammunition for your gun with you but leave the loaded ammunition in your car for when we go to the gun range. NO LOADED AMMUNITION IN THE CLASSROOM.

If you do not currently own a firearm, then bring 50 or more loaded rounds of .38 special target ammo and a box of 50 rounds of .22 calibre long rifle rim fire ammunition. You will be able to use a school gun to fire live rounds and you will get the opportunity to fire a variety of firearms. If you need help to purchase the right firearm for you, I’ll be able to help you. If you can’t find .22 LR don’t worry, I have some for you.

I will schedule a class when it is convenient for you. I like to have between two and seven students per class. We can complete a class in one session which includes a classroom session and live fire in five to six hours. We can also break a class into two sessions if that works better for you. For example we could have a class session for three to four hours during the morning, afternoon or evening and then shoot at the range at a later day. If the weather is nice we can shoot outdoors so wear clothing appropriate for the time of year and outdoors. No flip flops or sandals at the gun range. I recommend indoor shooting in winter and during inclement weather. There is a small range fee for using the indoor range and ammunition is available there.

If you have eye and ear protection suitable for firearms, bring it. I have extras as well, so it’s not absolutely necessary. Classes start at $125. A private class is $175.
